Walter "Wally" Lewis, 77, of Clark died Tuesday, May 3, 2011 in Salome, Ariz. He and his wife Patty had been wintering in Arizona. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Clark at 10:00 AM with The Reverend Mark Guthmiller officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Smith-Cagley American Legion Post #60 of Clark and the South Dakota Army National Honor Guard. There will be a reception following at the Peace Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Clark. Walter Clarence Lewis was born on November 12, 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Eddie and Barbra Lewis. Wally, as he became known by, grew up helping his father in his moving business and spending time on his uncle's farm in Milan, Indiana. In 1952, Wally moved to Phoenix, Ariz. and joined the Marines. He was then deployed to Korea. Upon returning from the Korean War, Wally was invited to South Dakota by now former Clark resident, Daryl Gottsleben . He was united in marriage in 1961 to Patricia McGraw. Wally worked at the Olson Ford Dealership, Mack's Standard and Audus Repair until 1971 when he opened his own repair business that was later converted to a Zip Feed Store. He was also a part-time farmer south of Clark. Once he retired, Wally began spending his winters in Salome, Ariz. where he enjoyed exploring the desert, searching for hidden gold and collecting unique rocks. Wally was a member of the Clark American Legion Cagley-Smith Post #60 and the Peace Lutheran Church in Clark. He is survived by his wife Patricia, sons, Mark (Jeannie)Lewis of Fisher, Minn., LTC Darin (Kimberly) Lewis of Lansing, Kansas, LTC David (Myra) Lewis of Fort Sill, Okla., retired SSGT Jayson (Kathy) Lewis of Fort Worth, Texas and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. There will be no visitation. The Furness Funeral Home of Clark is assisting the family.
