Veta Aker, age 101, went to meet the Lord on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at Edgewood Assisted Living in Watertown, SD with family at her side.
A funeral service with Reverend Mark Tracy officiating, will be held at the Garden City Community Church on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Garden City Cemetery.
Veta Sarah Aker was born on February 23, 1923 to Roy and Leta (Kay) Haakinson near Montrose, SD. She grew up on a farm and attended all 12 years of school at Orland School near Madison and graduated in 1941.
After graduation, she worked in Sioux Falls before marrying Norman Aker in Colton, SD on December 8, 1941. The couple later moved to Garden City, SD. There she worked at Grout's Grocers and Robb Hardware before moving to a farm.
Veta and Norman bought their own farm north of Garden City where they operated a dairy for 40 years. She was devoted to family, farming, and her community, loved country western music, milking cows, and driving tractor. Veta was also a member of the Garden City Methodist Church and served as Dinner Chairman for UMW, was involved in the Garden City Turkey Shoot BINGO, was secretary for the Development Corp., and was a lifetime member of the Auxiliary serving as treasurer.
Veta worked at the Post Office in Garden City as a Relief Postmaster from 1982 to 2002. During this time; Veta was also an Avon representative. She did this for 35 years and won the Award's Dolls. She and Norman moved to Watertown in 1995, but she continued to work in Garden City because she enjoyed it.
Veta will be missed by her surviving family; daughters Deb (Harlan) Becker, Sharon Niles, son Dennis (Carla) Aker all of Watertown, SD, six grandchildren, T.J. Boerger, Brian Aker, Angie Rycraft, Nicky Heath, Kathy Manzey, and Tammy Taecker, eighteen great grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Norman in 2006, parents, two brothers, Melvin (LaVonne) and Clifford (Eileen), one grandson, Craig Niles, and many other precious family members.
