Verdon Lamb

Verdon Lamb, 87, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Willow Lake, SD, passed away March 3, 2022. Verdon Lyle Lamb was born January 20, 1935, in rural Willow Lake to Lyle and Bertha (Warkenthien) Lamb. He grew up learning from his dad how to farm and how to work hard.

Verdon farmed all his life, and the part of farming he loved the best was raising cattle. He was a skilled cattle breeder who diligently took care of his herd and enjoyed feeding them and watching them grow. More than once his cattle sold for top dollar at the auctions. There were always horses and always a faithful dog by his side.

Verdon was united in marriage to Marlene Haug on June 22, 1957. The young couple moved to California while Verdon completed his tour of duty in the US Navy, working aboard the USS St Paul as a legal clerk. Following his honorable discharge, Verdon and Marlene returned to Willow Lake and purchased land to farm. The couple made their home there for 62 years.

Their lives were blessed with four daughters who were baptized and raised in the faith at Grace Lutheran Church in Willow Lake. The girls all grew up and married, had children of their own, and soon Verdon and Marlene's farm was the center of many gatherings and celebrations, as the family enjoyed spending time together throughout the years. Verdon was never happier than when he was surrounded by family and friends, sharing stories and being a mentor to many.

Verdon had a lifetime of public service. He served on the Grace Lutheran Church Council, Lions Club, Clark County Livestock, Community Funeral Home, Merton Township, Farm Bureau, Willow Lake School Board, and the Farmers Elevator.  He had a 39-year career of distinguished service as a board member of the Codington Clark Rural Electric Coop, SDREA, and East River Board.

In 2020, the couple moved from their farm to Sioux Falls where they enjoyed many happy and noisy family gatherings that included their children, grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene; daughters, Julie (Paul) Stjernholm, Nancy (Greg) Johnson, Lisa (Justin) Ehrman, and Susan (Joel) Poppen; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, Joel, Stephanie & Eleanor Stjernholm, Maren Stjernholm, Brian Stjernholm, Emily & Mason Breitling, Kirstin, Aaron, Anika, Anthony & Leah Johnson, Becca, Winston, Hadley & Asher Loman, Megan, Alex & Ila Knust, Katie, Josh, Kylie, Charlotte & Grayson Schorzmann, Allison, Michael, Charlie, Harper & Emmeline Sexton, Jenna, Dan, Jack & George Cragg, Michael Ehrman, Elise Poppen, Hannah Poppen, and Sam Poppen (Chloe); sisters, Delores (Walt) Gehrke, Vergean (Garald) Harms, brother, Kyle (Melynda) Lamb, sister-in-law Dorothy Haug, brother-in-law John Peterson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
