Shirley Hanora Reedy Hess

Shirley Hanora Reedy Hess, age 93, Sioux Falls, formerly of Clark and Watertown, died at her daughter's home in Sioux Falls on August 28, 2015. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Furness Funeral Home in Clark. A Christian Wake service will begin at 7PM with the Rosary to follow. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, September 4, 2015 at 11:00am at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Clark with Monsignor Steve Barnett and Father John Short officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Boniface Cemetery. She was born in Watertown on April 20, 1922, the daughter of Mary and Jeremiah Reedy. She attended Immaculate Conception grade school and graduated from Watertown High School. She worked in California and returned to Watertown in the late 40's, she was trained for and worked as an X-ray technician for several years. On June 14, 1948, Shirley was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Hess at Immaculate Conception Church at Watertown. Following their marriage, they lived in Clark. She was thrilled to become a mother to their three daughters and lovingly cared for them. She was a "fun and playful" mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend. Her Irish wit and wisdom touched not only her family, but many friends. Her gift of hospitality and wonderful meals made their home one to frequent. In 1964, Shirley returned to work at the Clark Medical Center where she X-rayed hundreds of people - and even some animals! She continued to enjoy her daughters' activities, golf, play bridge, support St. Michael's Church and was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She traveled extensively across the country as well as internationally. A highlight was her trip to her beloved Ireland in 1973 where she truly celebrated her Irish Catholic heritage. Shirley and Bob moved to Watertown in 2004 and following his death, Shirley moved to the Good Samaritan Society's Prairie Creek in Sioux Falls where she enjoyed the past eight years. She made great friends, found good bridge players and became an accomplished Wii Bowler. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and welcoming each new member with open arms and unconditional love. Those left to cherish her memory include her three daughters Sheryl (Frank) Barnett of Sioux Falls, Colleen (James) Paulson of Garden City and Shelly (James) Jensen of Sioux Falls; grandchildren Molly Barnett, Patrick (Keri) Barnett, Amy (Peter) Nielson, Angel Paulson (Mark Scharnberg), Matt Paulson, Amber Jensen (Nate Gardner), Eric Jensen and Brooke (Chris) Goodson; great Grandchildren Max and Quynn Nielson; Eloise and Everett Scharnberg; Natalie, Addilynn and Brielle Gardner; and Weslee Goodson (expectant). Also surviving is her sister, Marguerite Flakus, a special friend Sister Kay O'Neil and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Robert, four siblings and several in-laws.
