Shirrell Ann Mortenson, born on April 16, 1947, in Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on November 14, 2025, in Willow Lake, South Dakota surrounded by her loving family. A dedicated career woman, Shirrell was a nurse who also ventured into various businesses throughout her life, showcasing her remarkable work ethic and commitment to her endeavors.

Shirrell was the beloved daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Geiger) and Frank Mauldin, and she shared her life with siblings Pamelia, Joyce, and Frank, all of whom have predeceased her. She married Robert Mortenson. He died in 2000. Throughout her journey, she moved from Alabama to California, Arkansas, and finally settled in South Dakota in 2016. Her life’s journey gave her a lot of experiences, indicative of her unyielding spirit.

She cherished her pet dogs, Zeus and Wally, finding joy in their company. In her retirement, Shirrell truly came into her own. Her children are Katharine (John) Beckwith of California, Michelle (Jim) O'Hara of Willow Lake, South Dakota, Shealynn (Mike) Stone of Arkansas, and William Mortenson of Arkansas. She delighted in the presence of her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, imparting stories and lessons with love and care.

Shirrell was an excellent storyteller, weaving tales that captivated all who listened. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting, and indulging in her love for reading books. Each day offered her new opportunities to create and nurture, a testament to her vibrant spirit.

The legacy of Shirrell Mortenson will forever resonate within the hearts of those she left behind, as they carry forth her stories, lessons, and the indelible mark she made on their lives.
