Sharlene Hartman, age 73, died on Saturday, June 4, 2022 in Silver Spring, MD.

Services will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will take place at Prairie Hill Cemetery, rural Bradley, SD. Honorary Urn Bearers will be The Bradley High School Class of 1967. Urn Bearers will be her siblings.

Sharlene Rae Hartman was born on March 8, 1949 to Darwin C. Hartman and Mavis Fryett Hartman in Webster, SD. Sharlene completed all 12 grades of school in Bradley graduating with the Class of 1967. She continued her education for two years at the Watertown Business University and from there joined the Navy as a Wave in 1970.

Sharlene continued her Naval career into the Reserves and continued to work as a Strategic Systems Programmer in the Department of the Navy. She was excellent at her job. She survived and moved to the top in a male dominated field. Sharlene Hartman worked for the Department of the Navy for over 30 years. She began her career as a clerk typist and over the span of her career advanced to a Logistics Management Specialist. During her career she was responsible for logistics management of the Polaris/Poseidon/Trident Fire Control systems and liaised with the United Kingdom Trident Fire Control System logistics management team. She was instrumental in the development of the SSP Advanced Integrated Logistic (SAIL) system, which integrated the missile, launcher, navigation and fire control logistics management programs. This program is still in use and has resulted in significant cost saving for the Navy. In addition she was responsible for maintaining the Government owned buildings in Pittsfield, MA operated by General Dynamics. Sharlene retired in 2008.

Sharlene enjoyed traveling both for work and for pleasure going to England, Ireland, Greece, Alaska and many other locations in the U.S. She lived in the Washington, DC area for almost 50 years. She enjoyed reading, musicals, collectables, and shopping.

Sharlene is preceded in death by her parents, step father Hubert Valberg, grandparents, her brother Larry Hartman, nephew Lance Mohr, and great niece Isla Hartman.

She is survived by her brothers, Darrell (Debbie) Hartman of Redfield, Cliff (Dawn Kendrick) Hartman of Bradley; sister Jan (Steve) Solum, step brother; Rick (Lori) Valberg, and step sister, Roxie (Tim) McElhany all of Watertown, SD; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other friends and relatives; also, her dear friends John and Deanna Mehoves.
