Born on April 16, 1934, in Clark County, Robert was the son of Walter and Elsie Murphy. He graduated from Clark High School. Robert was deeply proud of his roots, often regaling family and friends with stories of his ancestors and their adventures. His Irish wit and storytelling ability were a trademark of his personality, and he loved sharing a good tale. He was an active participant in numerous St Patrick's day parades over the years, notably in Watertown.
Robert worked as an implement and tractor mechanic in Garden City and Blunt SD for a number of years. He also served in the South Dakota Army National Guard for six years, proudly doing his part to serve his country. He returned to Clark and the family farm upon the death of his father, and stayed on the farm to care for his mother, in her later years, a task he took on with quiet dedication. His devotion to family was evident in everything he did, and he cherished the time spent with his loved ones, especially his mother, Elsie. He was a long-time member of St Michael's Parish.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter, mother, Elsie, his brother Donald, sister-in-law Sandra, and great-niece Tara Kathleen. He is survived by his brother Bill, of Chicago, IL as well as numerous nieces, nephews, their families and other relatives and special friends, who will dearly miss his gentle nature and stories.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St Michael's Parish in Clark, SD, or the Parkside Assisted Living in Bryant, SD.
Robert's passing marks the end of an era for those who knew and loved him. His spirit will live on in the many stories he shared and the lessons he imparted about the importance of family, service, and honoring one's heritage. May he rest in peace.
