Richard Young, age 71, of Watertown, SD, died early Friday morning, November 20, 2009, at his home in Watertown surrounded by his family after a 2 year battle with an inoperable benign brain tumor.
Services will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 11AM in the Garden City United Methodist Church at Garden City with the Reverends Warren Rhodes and Ronald Burkhalter officiating. Music will be provided by Marvine Obermeier and Wendy Christman. Burial will be in the Garden City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
He was born, Glenn Richard Young, on April 11, 1938 at Bradley, the son of Glenn and Hazel (Krueger) Young. He grew to adulthood in the Garden City area attending school and graduating from Garden City High School in 1956.
On May 31, 1958 he was united in marriage to Cleo Arndt in the Garden City United Methodist Church. They farmed and worked in the Garden City/Bradley/Wallace area until 1984. The couple then moved to Watertown where he was employed as a machinist at Smith Equipment until his retirement in 2005. Even though Richard had retired he worked part-time at Lake City Motors until ill health forced his full retirement.
Some of his fondest moments were spent hunting, fishing, watching sports and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Lian.
Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife of over some 51 years, Cleo Young and a sister, Jean Lian both of Watertown, six children, Tonya (Robert) Van Wagner of Redfield, Jolene Sloan of Canton, OH, Dawn Lee of Webster, Scott Young of Watertown, Lisa (Jeff) Young of Sioux Falls and Al (Jessica) Young of Watertown, 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 nephews, Brian (Jody) Lian and Kevin (Kari) Lian all of Minnesota.
