Richard "Dick" D Orris

Richard "Dick" D. Orris, 71, of Cavour passed away Tuesday, February 5 ^th , 2019 at his home in Cavour. The memorial service for Dick will be held at Furness Funeral Home in Clark, SD on Saturday, February 16 ^th at 11:00 a.m.

Richard "Dick" DeOrville Orris was born on June 19, 1947 to Robert D. and Clarice A. (Bergan) Orris in Watertown,SD  where the family lived at the time. The family later moved west of Clark, SD and built and operated Valley View Service. They eventually started farming and raised livestock. Dick and his siblings all worked at whatever jobs were given them. The farm eventually grew and Valley View Service was closed as a business. Dick graduated from Clark High School in 1966. He attended Northern State College in Aberdeen for a time, he also attended a program for the visually impaired in Little Rock, Arkansas and Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown.

Dick was an avid reader and had an appetite to learn new things. He was considered by some to be a historian as he was quick to remember dates and events in history. In the past few years he broadened his horizons with the addition of his I-pad. He was able to research and gain more knowledge about things he had never thought possible.

His working career varied from farm work, to elevator work, to constructing jail cell doors, to working in a nursery, to working in a jerky factory. Each job he had he did his best and prided himself in improving the job or the product in some way. In 2016, he retired and started traveling and enjoying life. He enjoyed a trip with his sister to Norway where he made connections with distant relatives and researched places he had only read about. Dick had a big heart and a generous spirit. He rarely showed up on your doorstep with empty hands. He loved to talk on the phone and challenge a good debate when possible.

He is survived by six brothers and sisters. Donna Paakkonen of Richfield, MN, Lynda (Byron) Anderson of Saratoga, CA, Jim (Lori Elie) Orris, Loren (Maxine Anderson) Orris, Wayne (Barbara Bays) Orris all of Clark, SD, and Helen Jeanne (Jim) Fischbach of Warner, SD, a sister-in-law, Sandy Orris of Clark and many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Clarice and a brother, Paul Orris.
