Raymond S. Foiles, age 89, of Yankton, SD, formerly of the Clark and Raymond, SD communities, died on Thursday morning, April 15, 2010, at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 11AM in the United Methodist Church at Clark with the Reverend Warren Rhodes officiating. Music will be presented by organist Wanda Bethke and the congregation singing "This is My Father's World" and "His Eye is on the Sparrow". A special recorded song, I'll Fly Away" by Bryl Logan, Marilyn Flora and Raymond and Carol Foiles will be played. Casketbearers will be Dave Heinrichs, Steve & Dan Mach, Tom and Mitch Barr, Dean & Riley Hosman and Dale Foiles. Honorary casketbearers are Jennie (John) Warden, Kate Mach, Logan, Brady and Miranda Barr. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Clark.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 22 from 5-7PM with the family present at the Furness Funeral Home at Clark and visitation will continue after 9AM at the Church on Friday morning.
He was born Raymond Stenning Foiles on January 25, 1921 on a farm in Logan Township, south Raymond, SD, the son of Oscar and Jennie (Stenning) Foiles. He grew up attending the Logan Methodist Church and went to school in Logan Township, graduating from Logan High School in 1939. He then attended South Dakota State University.
On September 19, 1942 he entered the United States Navy and served his country honorably until December 23, 1945. He served most of his time aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid.
Raymond was united in marriage to Carol Faye Pierce on September 23, 1956 at the Clark United Methodist Church. To this union, three daughters, were born; Carmen, Laura and Amy. Following their marriage the couple lived and farmed on the original Foiles place in Logan Township. They continued living their after retirement from farming in 1984. They moved into a home in Clark for a time before relocating to Yankton in June of 2006, to be closer to their daughters.
He was a life-long active member of the Clark United Methodist Church where he participated in the choir, was a Sunday School Teacher and served as chairman of the Evangelism committee for a time. Raymond answered the call at a revival meeting when he was nine years old. He also enjoyed writing in his spare time authoring a book entitled On Being Salt & Light in 1993. Some of his other hobbies included woodworking, studying, supporting and working in the local church.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Carol in December of 2008, daughter Laura Lea Hosman, siblings, Verna Foiles, Mabel (Marvin) Logan, Alice (Curtis) Yates and their children Ron & Linda, a nephew, Larry Logan and a niece, Barbara Brown.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his children, Carmen (Steve) Mach of Yankton and Amy (Tom) Barr of Sioux Falls, 5 grandchildren, Jennie (John) Warden, Dan (Kate) Mach, Riley Hosman, Logan and Brady Barr, a great-granddaughter, Ella Warden and a son-in-law, Dean Hosman of Brandon, SD. He also leaves his brothers, Delmar (Hazel) Foiles of Clark and John (Alvira Vi) Foiles of Raymond and 2 step-grandchildren, Miranda and Mitchell Barr.
Memorials in his memory can be directed to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Dakota Wesleyan University at Mitchell, SD or the United Methodist Church at Clark.
