Nellie Marie Bailey was born Nellie Marie Larson on May 6, 1924, in Bradley, SD to Elmer and Alta Larson. She had one younger sister Beverly, with whom she shared a rare and special bond. Nellie departed this earthly world on October 27, 2023, at 7:20 am at the age of 99 with her beloved family by her side. Nellie married her high school sweetheart, Joe Bailey, and together they raised five sons, Wright, Michael, Joe, Scott, Keith and Dale. They raised their adventurous boys on a farm just outside of Clark, SD and taught them the importance of hard work and family values. Nellie and Joe were active in the Democratic party in South Dakota and played a key role in the elections of numerous politicians in their community. Their success earned Joe an appointed government position that moved the family to Rapid City, SD. While in Rapid City, Nellie worked as a secretary at the School of Mines, a position that brought her much pride and joy. Her sons tell many stories of family days at the lake filled with beautiful memories. When her sons were grown, Nellie and Joe sold their home and traveled the country in the RV. Joe and Nellie's outgoing and friendly nature assured them that they never met a stranger, as they made numerous friends in their travels. Nellie's faith was always central in her life, and she perpetually shared her faith with family and friends. Nellie was the embodiment of unconditional love for her large family and her countless friends. Whether through blood or by marriage, Nellie was fiercely devoted to all her family and loved them dearly.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Bailey, her parents, Elmer and Alta Larson, and her sister, Beverly.
She is survived by her five sons, twenty-six grandchildren, fifty-seven great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Nellie was loved by many and will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery at 10:00 AM on July 27, 2024. The service will be followed by lunch at St. Paul Lutheran Church in the basement.
