She attended grade school for 6 years at Jasper, MN and then the family moved to Mount Pleasant Township near Clark, SD attending the Concord School. At the age of 16, she graduated from Clark High School in 1932, where she also played basketball and ran track for four years. After high school she attended a business college in Minneapolis and worked in Minneapolis. She returned to Clark and worked for a period of 7 years for the USDA - Dept. as a secretary. She also worked for the Clark School District serving as the secretary to the Superintendent. On May 12, 1938 she was united in marriage to Hugo Schrum. They lived and farmed near Clark until retiring in 1963 and moving into Clark. Hugo died on January 11, 1993. Myrtle continued living in her home until just after his death when she moved to a condo at Pebble Beach in Clark, then later to the Wookey Assisted Living Center and then to the Golden Living Center. The couple enjoyed many years of traveling together including at least stepping foot in all but a couple of the States of the USA. Just a little note on the couples 55 years of marriage, they loved to dance, even interrupting a meal or two on occasion if dance music came on the television! The Schrum's joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1957 and were very active members until his death and Myrtle continued being a member of the Church until her death. She had served as the financial secretary at the Church for 35 years, sang in the choir for 43 years and was part of the WELCA, circles and Bible study. In the community of Clark Myrtle was involved in many organizations among them being the Clark Library Board for 15 years, a volunteer at the nursing home for 15 years, member of a Women's club and was coordinator for the 60+ Dining for 10 years. In her free time she thoroughly enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing bridge, being a member of at least two bridge groups, one of them for over 60 years. She enjoyed doing embroidery work and gardening, especially flowers. While she would sit an embroider, the television was often tuned to either the Minnesota Vikings or Minnesota Twins, watching sports was a favorite of hers. She was proud of saying she had watched Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle play baseball in Minneapolis. Myrtle writes "Other things I enjoyed doing was playing my piano & organ, hunting, cooking, reading and dancing; and of course, my good friends". Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Hugo, brother, Donald S. Hanson and a sister, Verdell (Joe) Leathers. Grateful for having shared in her life are nephews, nieces and a sister-in-law, Mary Hanson of Florida. Funeral arrangements are with the Furness Funeral Home at Clark where there is an on-line registry at www.furnessfuneralhome.com
