Montserrat "Monsie" Patnoe, age 88, of Clark, died late Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2015 from 5-7 PM with a wake service at 7 PM at the Furness Funeral Home at Clark. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Clark with the Reverend John Short officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Boniface Cemetery at Clark. The daughter of Pedro and Lourdes Roses, Montserrat was born on October 12, 1926 in Manilla, Philippines. Tragically, both her parents died by the time Monsie was eleven years old. She went to live with her aunt who she fondly referred to as Mama Nena, since she loved and raised Monsie like her own child. After graduating high school, Monsie worked on the United States Army base that was stationed in Manilla as an administrative assistant. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Lawrence Patnoe. They were married in the Philippines among family and friends and then moved back to the mainland. They resided in Battle Creek, Michigan until Lawrence was honorably discharged and made their move to Raymond, South Dakota to begin their life of farming and ranching. In 1992, they moved to Clark after retiring. Retirement allowed them the luxury of spending winters in Phoenix, AZ in their RV for 19 years. They made many friends and have so many great memories from those years. She loved her Thursday bingo nights with fellow campers and their 3:00 daily coffee group. Lawrence and Monsie relocated to Sioux Falls in 2013 to be closer to family and resided at Dow Rummel Village. Monsie was a loving mother and wife. To her last days, her family was the thing that brought her true joy. She was an excellent cook and seamstress for her family. Her kitchen was always filled with wonderful aromas from the many recipes she collected. During the spring and summer, her flower beds, plants and garden were in full bloom from her green thumb. Monsie loved to read a good mystery, crocheting and never turned down a card game with friends or family. She perfected the art of bargain shopping and always had time to stop by a local garage sale to test her talents. While raising her family, Monsie was active in the neighborhood ladies group called "Jolly Neighbors" and was a long time member of St. Michael's Catholic Church where she served on the altar society. She also was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and Clark County Democrats and served on the election board for many years. Monsie is survived by four daughters, Linda Williams, Denise (Bill) Ladwig, Theresa Weber (Keith Jiran) and Lisa Patnoe (Franco Lomonte); six grandchildren, Kristin (Justin) Nichols, Riley Weber, Amanda (Jason) Harris, Adam (Emma) Ladwig, Trey Patnoe and Brenan (Kylee) Jiran; nine great-grandchildren, Kaylen Harris, Griffin Harris, Kate Nichols, Ellie Nichols, Luke Weber, William Ladwig, Levi Jiran, Vince Jiran and Jack Jiran. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; two sons, Lawrence Jr, and Jerry; and her parents.
