Melanie E. Smith

Melanie Edna Smith, aged 72, went home to be with the Lord on May 10, 2026. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Furness Funeral Home in Clark from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clark, followed by burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in Clark. A meal and time of fellowship will be held following burial, at the church.

Melanie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose smile would light up any room. She was the heart of our family and will be remembered for her tremendous strength, kindness, patience, and genuine care for all who crossed her path. Her grandchildren called her Mimi and she spoiled them beyond reason with gifts for every occasion. Thousands of "I love yous," and dozens of caramel rolls hot out of the oven frequented their lives.

Melanie was born on August 31, 1953 in Watertown, the youngest child of Merritt "Babe" and Edna (Peterson) Seefeldt. Melanie grew up in Clark County and graduated from Clark High School in 1971. She was a highly talented saxophone player. She met Gail Smith after her family moved to the farm. They rode the school bus together. They were married on August 11, 1973. Melanie and Gail's marriage of 52 years was filled with laughter, love, unwavering devotion, and thousands of card games.

Melanie graduated from SDSU with a degree in Home Economics and minor in music and worked in the Bryant School as a home economics teacher. In 1977 she opened the Clark Flower & Gift Shop with her sister-in-law, Linda Seefeldt. For 48 years, Melanie and Linda were part of their community's celebrations, special occasions, and times of loss. They were business leaders and devoted supporters of community events. She was an avid supporter of Potato Days as well as serving as President and an active member of the Clark Area Chamber of Commerce for several years. Melanie donated her time to the local 4-H Clubs. She actively took part in teaching and judging in the home economics areas. The flower shop was more than a store – it was a family. Melanie's friends fondly remember seeing her content in her corner making floral arrangements, but also quick to look up with a big smile to welcome them in. She always had a great attitude and a lot of patience.

Melanie enjoyed working in her garden, tending to plants, crocheting, traveling, and baking. She loved her home that her dad built for her and Gail to raise their family. Their farm, backed by a slough and surrounded by fields and horses, welcomed all visitors with a hot meal and friendly puppies. She looked forward to the annual invasion of boisterous pheasant hunters who filled her home with laughter and memories. More than anything, Melanie wanted to be surrounded by the people she loved. When she and Gail had their children and grandchildren all together, she was at her happiest. She wanted to hear about every game, dance performance, and band concert. She celebrated her children's and grandchildren's victories and encouraged them during disappointments with gentle words and open arms.

Melanie will be deeply missed by her husband, Gail Smith; sons Nathan (Tara) Smith and Kirk (Jenn) Smith; sister-in-law Linda Seefeldt; brothers Mike Seefeldt and Marshall (Pam) Seefeldt; grandchildren Judson Smith, Bennett Smith, and Cecilia Smith; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Merritt "Babe" and Edna Seefeldt, brother Merritt Seefeldt, and beloved niece Nicole Seefeldt.

Melanie's laughter, generosity, and grace will forever live in the hearts of her family and friends.
