Mavis Hawkyard

Mavis Hawkyard, age 94, of Clark, SD, died at Avantara Lake Norden on Thursday, September 8, 2022.

Memorial Services will be held at Furness Funeral Home on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at 2 PM with visitation one hour prior. Following the service, burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery of rural Clark with a lunch and a time of fellowship to follow at Furness Funeral Home.

Mavis Ellen Smith Hawkyard was born on March 19, 1928 in Darlington Township, Clark County, SD to parents Harold and Ellen (Thoreson) Smith. She graduated from Clark High School in 1946 and went to work for the First National Bank in Clark. Mr. Mann hired her and trained her at the bank. Her sister Muriel recalls him saying "I hire them and train them and then they either get married or leave!" Mavis was transferred to the First National Bank of Minneapolis in Bloomington, MN, in the early 1960s.

While working in the Minneapolis area, she met Glenn Hawkyard.  The couple were married on December 19, 1970 in Clark, SD.  For most of their married life, they lived in St. Louis Park, MN. In their later years, the couple lived in Walker Methodist Place, an assisted living center in Minneapolis.  Glenn died in 2012 and in 2015, Mavis moved back to Clark to reside at Roetell's Assisted Living Center.

Mavis loved to travel.  She took many tours before she was married and then she and Glenn traveled a lot and loved spending time at arboretums, especially the Minnesota Arboretum.  She loved collecting music boxes and cups and saucers and cheering on the Minnesota Twins.  Mavis will be lovingly remembered as the doting aunt remembering her nieces and nephews with souvenirs from her travels and greeting cards. She was so much fun with a witty sense of humor.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harold and Ellen Smith; her husband, Glenn Hawkyard; and her siblings, Muriel (Bernell "Mike") Larson and Marvin (Nona), Wilmer (Frances), Allen (Roberta), and Robert Smith.

Mavis is survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Roetell's Assisted Living in Clark, Avantara in Lake Norden, and Prairie Lakes Hospice of Watertown, for their care, compassion and comfort for Mavis on this final journey of her life.

Arrangements are with Furness Funeral Home of Clark. There is an online guestbook at www.furnessfuneralhome.com.
