Visitation will be on Friday, January 6, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Furness Funeral Home in Clark, SD and one hour prior to the service. A funeral service will be held at the Vienna Lutheran Church in Vienna, SD on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 10:30 AM.
Mavis was born September 30, 1924 to George and Nora (Knadle) Cluts at Vienna, SD.
Mavis found a love for dance at a young age, learning by standing on her dad's feet. She continued her passion by going to area dances for many years.
Mavis attended Kindig Country School and graduated from Vienna High School in 1942. She began her banking career right out of school, when she started at the bank in Vienna.
Mavis married O'Dean in Vienna on November 29, 1944. She received her proposal, sent her acceptance, and then got her engagement ring all thru the mail, as O'Dean was working in California.
The couple lived in various towns in South Dakota and settled in Egan for 17 years to raise their family. She worked in the office at the Egan school.
In 1969, they purchased the elevator in Henry. Mavis began working in the business office at the Clark High School. At night, she would do the books for the elevator.
Then Mavis received a call asking if she would like to work for Citizen State Bank (now Dacotah Bank) in Clark. She relocated to the Henry branch. She worked there until her retirement.
Mavis will always be remembered as a wonderful mom, grandmother, and friend. She loved to crochet and made afghans for her family. She had a quick wit and she always had a comeback for you.
Mavis and O'Dean had a cabin at Lake Poinsett for many years. You could always count on a meal and her chocolate cake. Her grandkids are still trying to locate the cake recipe. We all have wonderful memories of time spent there.
Mavis is survived by her daughters, JoDean (Lee) Tice, Moorpark, CA and Dawn (Al) Koch, Watertown, SD; daughter in-law, Kathy Brenden, Green Valley, AZ; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Erika) Tice, Sarah (Kris) Michael, Becky Redderson, Rachael Tice, Angie (Tony) Ringheimer, Jim (Erin) Brenden, Chelsey (John) Wiik, Leslie (Tim Grygiel) Brenden, Jared (Julie) Brenden, and Bryan Koch; fifteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; sister in-law, Shirley Brenden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband O'Dean in 2001; sons, Danny (2020) and Tom (2010); daughter in-law, Myrna (2019); her brother, Gordon and Gordon's wife, Myra Cluts.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Furness Funeral Home of Clark, SD where there is an on-line registry at www.furnessfuneralhome.com.
