Mary was born on July 30, 1930, on the family farm near Stratford, SD to Arthur and Emma (Melcher) Voight, the youngest of four children. Mary attended country school through first grade, then attended and graduated from Groton High School. After graduation, Mary enrolled in a five-year nursing program, completing her Bachelor of Nursing Education degree at SDSU. It was during her time at SDSU that Mary met Harold Hurlbert. The couple was united in marriage on September 4, 1954, in Clark. They moved to the Hurlbert family farm near Raymond.
Mary enjoyed staying at home to raise their daughters Ann and Karen. Once the girls started school, Mary began working at the Clark Nursing Home as the Director of Nursing from 1965-1976 and later as the Clark County Health Nurse. As the family farm and grain cleaning business grew, Mary was called back to the farm where she was the bookkeeper for the next 22 years. She served as the Nurse/Counselor at South Dakota Girl's State for 14 years. Mary was a member of the Thrifty Gang Extension Club and served as St. Michael Altar Society treasurer for many years.
In 1998, the couple moved into Clark and were able to go on many bus trips throughout the United States with friends. They also greatly enjoyed delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels program in Clark. Mary continued to live in her home after Harold passed away on July 24, 2016. She moved into Roetell Senior Housing in November 2021 and resided there until November 2024 when she became a resident at Avantara Clark. Mary was a proud 70-year Raymond Legion Auxiliary member.
Mary enjoyed playing bridge, completing crossword or logic puzzles, listening to music, playing the piano and organ, and researching family genealogy. Mary always made sure there were treats in her candy drawer for grandkids and their children.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Harold, parents Arthur and Emma (Melcher) Voight, and her siblings: Clare (Bill) Brotherton, Butch (Maxine) Voight, Clint (Agnes) Voight; and brother-in-law Gordon (Pat) Hurlbert.
Mary is survived by her daughters: Ann Schmidt, of Raymond, SD, and Karen (Jim)
Kopriva of Raymond, SD; Ann's family: Ryan (Amanda) Schmidt and their children: Parker, Alexia, Jackson, and Allie; Sara (Jacob) Ebbers and their sons, Easton and Lawson; Bruce Schmidt; Karen's family: Angela (Kerry) Brown and their children: Ivy, Adelyn, Emma; and Lee Kopriva. Mary is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the Hurlbert family requests that memorial donations be made to the Prairie Valley Cemetery in Raymond in Mary's memory.
