He was born Marlyn Dean Kannegieter on August 18, 1941 on a farm near Willow Lake, the son of Arthur Edward and Olive F. (Shurr) Kannegieter.  He attended school at Willow Lake graduating in 1960.  Marlyn served his country honorably in the National Guard.

Marlyn farmed on the family farm his entire life.  On September 21, 1968 he was united in marriage to Crystal Rumple at Lake Poinsett.  The couple lived and farmed near Willow Lake until moving into town in the mid 1990's.  Marylyn continued to farm even while living in town.

He enjoyed working the land and being outdoors. Marlyn loved to hunt, especially deer, being proud of a Boone and Crockett Trophy buck.  Marlyn hunted deer with both rifle and archery.  He enjoyed going to car shows, races at Huron and Marion, farming with red tractors, and following sports.  Basketball especially was a passion of his both at SDSU and at the local gym.  Often Marlyn would sneak off to go see a game at the Willow Lake gym.

Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings, Harold and Ruth (Buzz) Bastian, brothers-in-law, Lee Goodman and Gene Monahan.

Survivors include his wife Crystal of Willow Lake, a daughter, Lisa (Alan)  Bahe of Brookings, Steven of Willow Lake, and Daniel (Jenalee) Kannegieter of Bryant, and 3 grandchildren, Chantal, Sammi, and Brodie.  Also surviving are his siblings, Lois Monahan and Clifford (Carol) Kannegieter all of Watertown and Nola Goodman of Sidney, Montana.
