Marlyce Odella Haug Peterson, age 82, Willow Lake, died peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2015 after a long illness with Parkinson's Disease. Visitation will be held Friday, October 23, 2015 from 5-7 PM at the Grace Lutheran Church at Willow Lake. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Grace Lutheran Church at Willow Lake with Pastor Keith Garness officiating. Burial will follow at Collins Cemetery at Willow Lake. Marlyce Odella Haug Peterson was born a child of the prairie on the family farm by Willow Lake, on June 18, 1933, to Anne Margrete Andersen Rekstad and Anders Edwin Haug. She was the ninth of ten children and attended Collins #34 country school and graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1951. After graduation she worked as a bank teller at Northwest National Bank in Huron, SD. She would ride the "Galloping Goose" train back to Willow Lake for the weekends. During this time she was a member of the women's group called the Dorcas Society. Marlyce married her high school sweetheart, John Peterson, who fell in love with her dimples and her singing. On October 16, 1954 they were married in Willow Lake and recently celebrated their 61st Anniversary. Marlyce resided on the farm with John which they purchased in 1963. She died peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. Marlyce was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she enjoyed teaching and being Sunday school superintendent. As a busy farm wife, she helped on the farm raising calves, collies, and her family. She enjoyed making cozily quilts, sewing, refinishing furniture, genealogy, canning, baking bread, and singing. One of her passions was writing stories about her family, her Norwegian heritage, and life on the prairie. She won many ribbons at the SD State fair and was published in: Grandma's Book and We Fought the War, South Dakota Hall of Fame Magazine, Farm Wife News, Country Woman, Dakota West, Readers Digest, and Reminisce Magazine. She was the author of Prairie Child and was working on a new book call Coffee with the Lord. She was a former journalist for the Clark County Courier. Grateful for having shared her life, her husband John; children Timothy (Mary) Peterson, Springfield, SD; Jayne (Donald) Pommer, Willow Lake, SD; Beth (Richard) Abrahamson, Oldham, SD; Pamela (Dr. Michael) Nass, Flandreau, SD; Carol (Jim) Laverick, Custer, SD; Kenneth (Donna) Peterson, Springfield, SD; Amy (Ryan) Forbes, Volga, SD; 22 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; her sister, Marlene (Verdon) Lamb of Vienna, SD: sister-in-law Dorothy Haug and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Grace Herron, Lucille Vastola, Lyle Haug, Avis Hartung, LaVonne McShane, Harvey Haug, Kenneth Haug, Roger Haug; son-in law, Morgan Borden, and granddaughter, Kendra Borden. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Grace Lutheran Church at Willow Lake for the youth to use for bible camps and other youth programs or the South Dakota Parkinson's Foundation, web address above under service information.
