Marjory (Roberdeau) Nelson, 93, of Doland died suddenly and peacefully Wednesday, January 14, 2015 in the Alzheimer's Unit of the Golden Living Center at Lake Norden where she resided since June 4, 2012. Wendy Christman will provide the music. The honorary casketbearers will be her granddaughters, Sarah and Emily French and Kara Moes with the active casketbearers being Scott and Steve Boyd, Adam and Ryan Vogel and Jeremy Moes. Burial will follow in the Doland Cemetery at Doland, SD. Marjory Irene Roberdeau was born February 11, 1921 to Joe and Ethel (Grant) Roberdeau. On a farm south of Clark, Marj grew up a tomboy who preferred being outdoors. She would always help hitch up the team of draft horses, and with her older brother, Kenneth, would play at jumping from the back of one horse to the other as they stood in their stalls. After attending country school until eighth grade, she graduated in 1939 from Clark High School and then went on to receive her teaching certificate from Northern College. While teaching country school she purchased a Model A Ford with a rumble seat which her students would pile into so she could drive them to enjoy one of her favorite past times -- watching a softball game. At a dance in 1938 she met Milford "Stretch" Nelson and on June 12, 1943 they were married. They lived on the Nelson farm near Doland and raised four daughters. Marj was a member of Eastern Star and a 4-H leader who taught her children and grandchildren how to sew, garden and bake bread. In her retirement she enjoyed golfing with her life-long friend Margie (Tipton) Seefeldt. She is remembered for always putting another's comfort before her own, her gift of listening and her common sense wisdom that made her house a home and her friendship a treasure. Marjory was a courageous woman who only feared becoming a burden, yet even as her dependency grew in later years, she was perhaps unaware that experiencing life with her continued to be a beautiful privilege. Marjory is survived by daughters, Joan (Dennis) Boyd of Hartford, Mary (Bill) French of Doland, Linda (Kim) Aamodt of Clark, Susan (Scott) Vogel of Doland; seven grandchildren, Steve Boyd, Scott (Christina) Boyd, Emily French, Sarah French, Adam (Jen) Vogel, Kara (Jeremy) Moes, Ryan (Jess) Vogel; seven great-grandchildren, Kassidy, Madelyn, Braxon and Treyson Boyd, Deegan and Paxtyn Moes, Willa Marjory Vogel; and nephew Joseph Roberdeau of Cincinnati, Ohio. Marjory was preceded in death by her husband Milford "Stretch" Nelson in 2010, her parents, her brother Kenneth Roberdeau, sister-in-law Vada Roberdeau, and great-grandchild Otto Andrew Vogel. Funeral arrangements are with the Furness Funeral Home at Clark where there is an on-line registry at www.furnessfuneralhome.com
