Marivonne Bastian, 92, of Clark, passed away on December 28, 2025, at Avantara Clark Care Center. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Clark United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will immediately follow the service at Rose Hill Cemetery in Clark. Marivonne Janice Bastian was born on November 22, 1933, to Alfred and Mabel (Trevithick) Warkenthien in Willow Lake, South Dakota. Marivonne attended grade school in rural school in Willow Lake before attending high school in Clark, SD, later going on to receive her teacher’s certificate at a 6-week certification college in Aberdeen. Following her education, Marivonne taught at Merton School for 1 year before meeting her future husband, Bob Woodland. In 1953, the couple were married and quickly adjusting to Air Force life, living in Sequine, TX, San Antonio, TX, Topeka, KS, and finally returning to Clark in 1956 and settled into civilian life.
After Marivonne returned to Clark, she worked at the Treasurer’s office and the Register of Deeds office until 1963, when Bob became immobile due to a racing accident. During this time Marivonne had the privilege of loving, caring for, and sharing life with her best friend, soul mate, and husband until September 30, 1976, when God called him home. The Lord had His guiding hand on us each of the 13 ¼ years the couple spent together.
Following Bob’s passing, Marivonne worked as a police and sheriff dispatcher before babysitting for Buzz Bastian’s two small children. On April 22, 1979, the couple wed in Sioux Falls in a private ceremony with Ken Voas acting as the pastor. Buzz and Marivonne spent many years together in the country until 1997, when they moved to Clark. On Christmas Day, 2000, Buzz went home for Christmas after suffering from cancer. Marivonne went on to work at the ASCS office for 11 years, retiring in 1994. While “retired”, Marivonne could often be found helping with food and cleaning capacities at Clark Lanes for 8 years.
Marivonne belonged to many different clubs such as the Lionesses, church Sunday school, church circles, auxiliary, and she also loved babysitting. She always loved her “little people!” Marivonne also enjoyed bowling, earning several awards and helping Mike and Tony out as much as she could.
Marivonne is survived by her children: James Woodland, Sherry (Hal) Hoaas, and Michael Woodland; two step-children: Shawn (Lynn) Bastian and Rebecca (Tony) Kreuter; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Sharon LaMont; brother, Marlin Warkenthien; and several extended family members.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Darryl, Keith, and Delwin Warkenthien; sister, Janice Kangas; her husband Bob Woodland; husband Derald “Buzz” Bastian; and an infant son, Tony Woodland.
