Margaret Mehner Miles, age 93, Willow Lake, Lake Township, South Dakota, passed away quietly on Thursday afternoon, January 29, 2009 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Janine and John Cone.
A private family time was held at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel in Clark on Saturday, January 31, 2009. Graveside services were held on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at noon at the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA with a grandson, James. J. Cone, presiding. Burial followed.
Margaret Lilly Mehner was born on July 17, 1915 in Salt Lake City, UT. She was the oldest of seven children and daughter of German immigrants, Friedrich and Nanny (Lucas) Mehner. She spent most of her youth and adulthood in Southern California. She married John C. Miles (a Willow Lake, Lake Township, South Dakota native of about 13 years) on June 27, 1947 at Yuma, AZ. They lived in Southern California until his death on May 27, 1955. They had one daughter, Janine. In 1956 she moved to Anchorage, Alaska where she lived until 1961 at which time she returned to Southern California. She resided in the communities of Victorville, San Bernardino, Orange, Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks. In 1999 she moved to South Dakota.
She was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many capacities. At a young age she started her job career in her parents restaurant in Victorville, CA. She was known for her compassion, kindness and generosity in so many ways, as well as the delicious German baked goods she made and shared. Over the years she loved traveling from Southern California to South Dakota to visit regularly; especially when there was a new grandchild born.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janine (Miles) and John Cone, who she had resided with in Willow Lake, Lake Township, South Dakota since September of 1999. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and two sons from a previous marriage.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Miles, parents, three sisters, three brothers, a step-son and his wife.
