He was born Lloyd Edward Battest on a farm northeast of Frankfort, SD on September 27, 1926, the son of William "Bill" and Louise (Meyer) Battest. On his 5th birthday the family moved to a farm 4 miles west of Doland. Lloyd attended the Sapp Country School and then completed two years of high school in Doland.
On February 23, 1945 he was drafted into the US Army and served his country honorably until November 27, 1946. While in the service, he was trained as an infantryman, worked in a Second Class Post Office and finished as a heavy duty truck driver in the Philippines. After his stint in the service, Lloyd returned to the farm and continued farming.
On September 27, 1958 he was united in marriage to Deloris "Dee" Hoffmann in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Wessington, SD. They lived northeast of Doland for 8 months until they moved to a farm east of Doland, where they lived and farmed.
Lloyd loved his family, tilling the soil, working the land, and raising sheep until he retired from farming in 1997. They continued living on the farm where he enjoyed gardening and giving away his produce. In September of 2014 they moved into Clark.
In the community, Lloyd was a Life Time member of American Legion where he had been active and held many offices on the local, county, district, and state level, including being a State Area Vice Commander. Lloyd was a life member of both the VFW at Redfield and the South Dakota Farmers Union. Lloyd was privileged to have been able to travel on the South Dakota Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2009. He was a member of the 40 et 8 in Huron – a Veterans organization, and served as a Spring Township supervisor for 17 years. In his free moments he enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading Zane Grey books.
Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings, Don Carter, Robert, Raymond, Betty, Harold, Dolores, Bernell and a brother and sister in infancy.
Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife of over 57 years, Deloris "Dee" Battest of Clark, daughters, Mary (Andrew) Raile of Aberdeen, Donna (Andy) Perrion of Sioux Falls, and Gail (Brad) Temple of Clark; 6 grandchildren, Anita Raile, Matthew, Louise, and Daniel Perrion, and Jordyn, and Jessica Temple.
