Lawrence Patnoe, age 85, Clark, died peacefully in the Dow Rummel Village at Sioux Falls with family at his side on Thursday, October 10, 2013. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 6:30-8:30PM with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7:30PM all in the Furness Funeral Home at Clark. The immediate family will gather at 10:30AM at the funeral home on Monday morning and will go in procession to the Church. There will be no viewing at the Church on Monday morning. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the St. Michael's Catholic Church at Clark. The Reverend John Short will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery at Clark. The son of Ralph and Evon (Fox) Carter, Lawrence was born on December 28, 1927 in Grant County, SD. He graduated from Clark High School where he participated in football and choir. He then enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Manila, Philippines. He was a Sergeant 4th Class serving as military police. Lawrence met and married the love of his life, Montserrat Roses, while serving in the Philippines. They were wed on June 12, 1948 and just celebrated 65 years of marriage. Lawrence and Monsie moved to Battle Creek, Michigan in September, 1948 where he worked for the army at Percy Jones General Hospital in medical records and recruiting. He also played on the Army football team. In June of 1949, they moved to Raymond to begin farming. In 1957, Lawrence was honored as the Outstanding Young Farmer. They retired from farming and moved to Clark in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, softball, bowling, playing cards, cribbage and commiserating over the Twins. But his true joy in life was his family. Lawrence was a life-long member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Clark where he was an usher and a lector. He served on the Fordham School Board, County Weed Board, Extension Board, Elevator Board, Parish Council, Golf Club Board, 4-H leader, Clark County Democrat Chairman, Fordham Township Tax Assessor and Relay For Life. Lawrence was a lifetime member of the Raymond American Legion and a 20 year member of the Clark Lions Club. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Monsie; four daughters, Linda Williams, Denise (Bill) Ladwig, Theresa Weber (Keith Jiran) and Lisa Patnoe (Franco Lomonte); six grandchildren, Kristin (Justin) Nichols, Riley (Holly) Weber, Amanda (Jason) Harris, Adam (Emma) Ladwig, Trey Patnoe and Brenan (Kylee) Jiran; seven great-grandchildren, Kaylen Harris, Kate Nichols, Ellie Nichols, Luke Weber, Levi Jiran, Griffin Harris and Vince Jiran; three sisters, Betty (Butch) Helkenn, Mary (Dan) Addison and Alice (Charlie) Bassett; and brother Robert (Gail) Carter. He is preceded in death by his two sons, Larry and Gerald, his parents and three brothers, Charles, Max and Duane.
