Laura M. Christensen, age 78, Brookings, died in her home at Brooking on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.
A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, February 22 from 1-4PM at the Volga Community Center in Volga. Burial will be private.
She was born Laura Mae Poppen on March 30, 1938 at Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of William and Esther (Wilcox) Poppen. Laura attended school at Harrisburg, SD, graduating in 1955.
In 1957 she was united in marriage to Donald L. Christensen. The couple lived in Harrisburg and later in Sioux Falls where she worked at Litton Microwave Manufacturing. The marriage later ended in divorce. Laura moved to Lake Preston later and worked at Raven Industries in DeSmet as a seamstress. Nearly three years ago she moved to Brookings to be near her daughter Carlene.
In her free moments she enjoyed playing cards- especially Solitaire, sewing, and doing crafts. She will long be remembered for being a wonderful cook. Those of you who knew her well, meant don't disturb her while she was watching Miami Vice, CSI Miami, or some of the older detective shows or Ma and Pa Kettle.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and brothers-in-law, Dennis Reitz and Grant Holmstrom.
Survivors include her children, Carla Hessaa of Sioux Falls, Douglas (Anne) Christensen of Lake City, FL, Daniel (Marleen) Christensen of Amsterdam, Holland, and Carlene Myers of Brookings, 7 grandchildren, Amber, Jessica, Jordan, Jared, Douglas Jr., Tonya, and Catie, 12 great-grandchildren and siblings, Robert (Carolyn) Krull of Bryant, Minnie (Doug) Lett of Iowa, Bernice Reitz of Brookings, and Mary Holmstrom of Volga.
