Laura A. (Mrs. Ken) Asher, age 87, a longtime Clark educator. She died late Monday in a Clark care center after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark on Friday at 10:30 AM with the Reverend Roger Semmler officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery at Clark. Casketbearers will be her grandchildren, Cody, Matt, Kelly, Nick, Josh, Steve and Ben Asher. Dorothy Fuller will be the organist and the St. Paul Choir will sing. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-7PM with a P.E.O. service beginning at 6PM all in the Furness Funeral Home chapel. Visitation will continue at the Church on Friday morning after 9AM until service time. Laura Asher died in Clark, South Dakota on October 18, 2004 at the Beverly Healthcare Center where she had resided since July. She was born at Britton, SD on April 19, 1917, the daughter of Jeppe and Elna (Hansen) Schultz who emigrated from Denmark in the early 1900's. She spent her childhood years on a farm in Marshall County and graduated from Britton High School in 1935. She attended what is now Northern State University in Aberdeen and received a two-year teaching degree in 1937. She started her career teaching grade school in various country schools in Eastern South Dakota. On April 8, 1940 she was united in marriage to Kenneth A. Asher. As was required at that time, she was forced to quit teaching when she married. She and Ken lived in Clark where they raised three sons. After her children were in school, Laura returned to college and graduated from Northern State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education in 1967. She thought the 3rd grade in Thorp, Elrod and in Clark until her retirement in 1976. After retirement, Laura and Ken spent their winters in Phoenix, Arizona. They enjoyed traveling, golf, cards, fishing and spent many enjoyable years with their close friends in Clark and Desert shadows in Phoenix. Laura was a talented artist and was especially proficient in china painting at Desert shadows. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark and the church at Desert Shadows where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and an active member of P.E.O. Laura gallantly fought during her long struggle with cancer and it's many complications. She shall be missed by her husband, three children, seven grandchildren and her many friends and other relatives. Grateful for having shared in her life is her husband Kenneth of Clark, son, Al Asher of Rapid City and his children, Cody of Pierre and Matt of Denver; Don Asher and wife Connie and their children, Kelly and Nick all of Denver, CO; Jerry Asher and wife Bonnie and their children, Josh, Steve and Ben all of Fargo, ND. Also surviving is her sister, Marcella Brooks of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her cousins, Herluf Schultz and wife Joan, Vernon Schultz and wife Gloria and Eula Tigner and husband Norman and their families. Memorials would be appreciated in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Clark County Branch, Clark, SD.
