They returned to Clark County, north of Clark, where he continued his education and then graduated from Thorp High School on May 19, 1949. He moved to Minneapolis to attend telegraph school. While living in Minneapolis he worked as a pin setter at a local bowling alley. He was inducted into the United States Army in February of 1952 and served his country until his honorable discharge in January of 1954. While in the Army he was stationed in Germany. After his discharge he returned to South Dakota and married Evelyn Peterson on June 6, 1954 in the Grace Lutheran Church at Watertown. Following their marriage the couple has resided and farmed in Thorp Township. Kendal became a resident of the Golden Living Center at Clark in November of 2008. They have shared over 55 years of marriage. In earlier years he enjoyed hunting, especially pheasants. His love of the land and working the ground was his place in life, although he and Evelyn did manage to take a few trips during their 55 years - trips to Yellowstone, Winnipeg, Canada, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Arizona, the Black Hills and for their 50th wedding anniversary, they went to Hawaii. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Clark and the Smith-Cagley American Legion Post #60 of Clark. Arrangements are announced by the Furness Funeral Home at Clark where there is an on-line registry at www.furnessfuneralhome.com Final Harvest He was bound to the land from the day of his birth His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth Nurtured, sustained, by the soil he grew And his life, like his furrows, ran straight and true. In faith, each spring, he planted the seeds In hope, to reap his family's needs With patience, he waited for the harvest to come To gather the fruits of his labor home. Ever turning seasons, the years sped past Til the final harvest came at last Then claimed anew by beloved sod He was gathered home to be with God. - Barbara W. Weber
