She was born Janice Ruth Murray on June 8, 1939 in the mid-wife home of Mable Stacey at Clark, the daughter of Ralph and Ruth (Hoffman) Murray. She attended grade school in Day Township and then Clark School graduating from Clark High School in 1957. Janice worked in the office of the Community Oil after high school graduation. On August 14, 1958 she was united in marriage to Milo "Mike" Kolden in the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ at Clark. They lived and farmed in Merton Township and then moved to a farm in Day Township. They later returned to the farm in Merton Township and farmed until moving in to Clark in 1989 and then into their current home in early 2000. While on the farm Janice was very active in the day to day farming work, from mowing and raking hay, to dragging/digging and onto the harvest, running the combine. Having grown up on a farm, Janice knew what it took to make the operation work, she also enjoyed gardening, canning, raising chickens and gathering eggs. Many a time over the years a chicken would end up on the supper table as well with Janice being in charge of that project! In addition to her farm chores, she also worked for the South Dakota Potato Growers Assn. as an inspector, always bringing another prospective to the daily duties! Janice enjoyed her flowers, especially the large marigolds, cannas, lilacs she grew to the beauty of a red rose. She also loved playing cards, pinochle and golf especially. Second to none though was her love of family. Janice was grandma to many and thoroughly enjoyed her time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being a Cyclone Grandma, going to many sporting events over the years. Janice could bring a smile to anyone she met, even on a cloudy day. She was a lifetime member of the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ at Clark where she was active in its women's groups. Preceding her in death were her parents and a grandson, Adam. Grateful for having shared in her life is her husband of over 55 years, Milo of Clark, children, Lorie (Brad) Terhark of Willow Lake, Cherie (Rod) Jans of Henry, Gary (Betsy) Kolden of Vienna, and Connie (Aaron) Hemmingson of Clark. She also leaves 16 grandchildren, Joshua, Jeremy, Jared (Angela), Justin (Ashley), Jeffrey, Danrea (Jason), Corey (Jessica), Taylor, Torrey, Kandace, Janae, Chad, Krysta (Travis), Cassi, Seth, and Heath; 8 great-grandchildren, Macy, Nora, Evelyn, Charlie, Tanner, Gwyneth, Lucas, and Alexia. Janice also is survived by siblings, Richard (Varret) Murray of Eau Claire, WI and Lois (Wayne) Heuer of Summit, SD and a host of other family members and friends.
