Inez Irene Zugschwerdt, age 98, Clark, formerly of the Garden City community, died on Friday evening, January 2, 2004 in the Beverly Healthcare Center at Clark. She was the widow of Lee Zugschwerdt. She was born at Garden City on October 28, 1905, the daughter of Birten and Almyra (Harding) Barkhuff. She grew to adulthood in the Garden City area attending school there and graduating in 1925. Following her high school education, she attended SDSU at Brookings for 3 years before going to Nettleton College in 1929. She returned to the Garden City community and began working at the Garden City Tribune where she later became the editor. On June 11, 1942 she was united in marriage to Lee W. Zugschwerdt. The couple lived in Eden Township and farmed in Eden and Thorp Townships. In 1960 they purchased a service station in Garden City, which they operated until the mid 1960s. In 1981 they moved into Garden City and in December of 1986 moved to Clark. Mr. Zugschwerdt became a resident of the Parkview Care Center in Bryant in 1987. He died on July 31, 1993. Following his death she lived in the Colonial Apartments in Clark and in 1997 became a resident of the Roetell Assisted Living Center and then the Fay Wookey Memorial Living Center. In June of 2003 she moved in the Beverly Healthcare Center. Some of her hobbies included gardening, canning, knitting and crocheting. She was a member of the Garden City United Methodist Church and the UMW where she had held various offices, both in the Church as benevolence treasurer for many years and offices in the UMW. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Peace Chapter 160 of Raymond. Some other organizations she was involved in over the years included the Royal Neighbors of America, Rebekkah Lodge, Eden Eve Ladies, Farm Bureau Committee both in Clark County and the District levels and the Chatawee Card Club. Grateful for having shared her life is her daughter, Janet Hurlbert and husband Roger of Clark, 3 grandsons, Russ Hurlbert and wife Sherray of Raymond and their 3 children (great-grandchildren), Bailey, Jennifer and Joslyn, Randy Hurlbert and wife Ali and Jeff Hurlbert and wife Courtney all of Reno, NV; a stepson, Richard Zugschwerdt and wife Bonnie of Hernando, FL; 4 step-grandchildren, 8 step great grandchildren and 4 step great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and a step great grandson. Services will be held in the Garden City Methodist Church on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at 2PM with the Reverend Warren Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in the Garden City Cemetery. Music will be provided by Pat Seefeldt as organist and singing will be the Lighthouse Quartet. Casketbearers will be Bob Harding, Norman Alexander, Odean Solberg, Russ Hurlbert, Wayne Fletcher and Harold Nipe. All of her friends and caregivers will serve as honorary casketbearers. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:30PM-7PM with an Eastern Star Service at 6:30 PM, all in our Chapel. There will also be visitation on Tuesday at the church 1 1/2 hours prior to services.
