Hubert Elwin Valberg, age 92, died at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD on Thursday, March 17, 2022.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at 10:30 AM at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel of Clark with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Pastor Scott Dempster will officiate.  Casket bearers will be Brent Hartman, Ben Hartman, John Hartman, Riley Mohr, Brady Valberg, Bryce Valberg and Daniel McElhany.  Honorary bearers will be his other grandchildren, great grandchildren, and members of his Square Dance, Bowling and Senior Citizens groups. Burial will follow at Prairie Hill Cemetery of rural Bradley with full military honors by the US Army and the Bradley Legion Post #108. A lunch will be served at the Bradley Community Center following internment.

Hubert Elwin Valberg was born to Vesta Blanch Dally and Peder Daniel Valberg at Henry, South Dakota on January 23, 1930. He grew up on a farm near Henry and graduated from Henry High School in 1948.

He joined the US Army and served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. After his honorable discharge, he returned to SD and continued working in transportation. He drove delivery trucks for Coca Cola, Pete Monzel beer company, and Star Laundry. He had keys to every smalltown bar and café in the area. He was an early to bed, early to rise kind of guy and had his routes done by noon some days.

He enjoyed coffee time, eating out, watching sports, cooking shows, and council meetings. He and Mavis were members of several square and round dance clubs. They traveled many miles each week with their square dance friends to dance. In his younger years, he coached women's softball and bartended at the Guest House. He and Mavis bowled leagues at Plateau and Tommy's Bowling Alleys. He was a past president and very active in the Watertown Senior Center for many years. He also belonged to the Eagles Lodge, American Legion Post 108 in Bradley, SD and the VFW.

Hubert was married to Darlene Pomeroy and later divorced. Richard and Roxanne were born to this union. Hubert and Mavis Fryett Hartman were married September 28, 1974 in Watertown, SD and they were married for 47 years.

Hubert is preceded in death by his parents Peder and Vesta; wife Mavis Valberg; son Larry Hartman; grandson Lance Mohr; great granddaughter Isla Hartman; siblings Harold (Marlys) Valberg, Doris Sollin, and Deloris Springer; and niece Kimberly Springer.

Survivors include his children, Richard (Lori) Valberg and Roxanne (Tim) McElhany of Watertown, Shari Hartman of Silver Spring, MD, Darrell (Debbie) Hartman of Redfield, Cliff (Dawn Kendrick) Hartman of Bradley, and Jan (Steve) Solum of Watertown; twenty-one grandchildren; forty-two great grandchildren with one due in June and another in October; one great-great grandchild; brothers in law, Dale Sollin and Jim Springer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Watertown Senior Center, Jenkins Living Center, Prairie Hill Cemetery or Larry F. Hartman Legion Post 108 in Bradley.
