Hazel Louise Young

Hazel L. Young, age 92, Watertown, formerly of Garden City, died in the Prairie Lakes Care Center at Watertown on Sunday morning, April 29, 2007. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 10:30 AM in the Garden City United Methodist Church at Garden City with the Reverend Warren Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden City Cemetery. Lynda Stern will be the pianist with the congregation singing "In the Garden". There will be special music presented by Wendy Christman. She will sing "How Great Thou Art" and "He Touched Me". There will be no visitation. She was born at DeSmet, SD on August 29, 1914, the daughter of Carl August and Mabel Mary (Baker) Krueger. She attended school through the 8th grade in DeSmet and then moved with her family to Lake Preston where she attended high school. In 1931 her family moved to a farm north of Garden City. On June 4, 1934 she was united in marriage to Glenn Ronald Young at Webster. The couple lived in the Garden City area where she worked for area caf''s. She and Treva Headley also owned and operated the Home Caf' in Garden City. Hazel worked at the M & M Truck Stop Caf' in Clark and at the Clark Care Center. Her husband died in 1964. In 1965 she moved to Redfield and began employment as a practical nurse at the South Dakota Developmental School, a place she enjoyed working until retiring in 1976. Following her retirement she returned to Garden City and lived. She joined the Garden City Development Corporation and worked to build the Garden City Manor. After its completion she moved into the manor and was its manager for some 15 years. She continued making the manor her home until a short time ago when she moved into an assisted living center near Watertown and then to the care center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Garden City for many years, the Garden City Development Corp., the American Legion Auxiliary and the Garden City Centennial Committee. She really enjoyed life, some of her fondest moments were spent fishing with Treva - especially at Poinsett-, dancing, Thursday potluck meals and playing bingo. Her love of sports was second to none, listening to many games on the radio. She enjoyed collecting Elvis memorabilia, absolutely loved the color red, and was a very special Mother, Mother-In-Law and Grandmother. Survivors include her children, Lois Jean (Young) Lian of Garden City and Richard Young and wife Cleo of Watertown, 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves 2 sisters-in-law, Joyce Krueger of Sioux Falls and Wilma Krueger of Redfield. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, a son-in-law Kenneth Lian, brothers, Bill, James and Elden (Alta) Krueger and a sister, Helen.
