Hazel M. Solberg, age 100, Clark, the widow of Martin Solberg, died at the Roetell Senior Housing in Clark early Tuesday, March 22, 2011, morning. She had resided in the housing center for nearly 10 years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 2:30 PM in the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark with the Reverend Robin Schaunaman and grandson, Rev. Timothy Dean officiating. Music will be presented by Dorothy Fuller as organist with Roger Nordhus as soloist. He will sing "Softly and Tenderly". The congregation will sing "Borning Cry" and "Here I Am Lord". The casketbearers will be her grandchildren. Spring burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Clark. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5-7PM at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel in Clark and after 1PM at the Church on Saturday. Hazel Mildred Solberg was born on May 23, 1910 at Lily, SD, the daughter of Harold and Manda (Luvaas) Sparby. She was baptized and confirmed in the Our Saviors Lutheran Church south of Lily. She attended school in Lily. On November 2, 1925 she was united in marriage to Martin Solberg at Milbank. The couple lived with his parents for a time after their marriage and then engaged in farming near Butler and Lily. They then moved to a farm near Garden City where they farmed until 1956 when they moved to Sioux Falls. While living in Sioux Falls, she worked in various places among them being Augustana College working in the cafeteria and the dormitory and also worked in a cafeteria in a bank. Her husband Martin died on January 10, 1982 in Sioux Falls and in June of that year she moved to Clark. She has resided in Clark in her own home until moving into the Dakota Manor Apartments and since August of 2001 has resided in the Roetell Senior Housing. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark. While living on the farm Hazel was involved in all aspects of the farm whether it was milking, picking rocks, stacking bundles or working in the kitchen fixing meals. Some of her favorite pastimes were sewing, being very creative with all types of material and working with no patterns, quilting and was even crocheting up until about three years ago. While living at Roetell' s she thoroughly enjoyed putting together puzzles and playing Bingo, in fact even playing twice last week. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Martin, a granddaughter, Marcella Ness, a grandson, Mark Wike, a great-granddaughter, Laura Ness, a great-grandson, Cory Hofer, 3 brothers, Osvald, Reuben and Grant, 3 sisters, Nora, Mary and Sylvia, a son-in-law, Marvin Ness and a daughter-in-law, Darlene Solberg. Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Odean (Donna) Solberg of Pierre, Pearl M. (Carroll) Dean of Groton, SD, Harriet (Kenneth) Nordhus and Lester C. Solberg all of Clark, Ruth H. (John) Schmidli of Lockhart, TX and Alice M. (Merlyn) Wookey of Webster, 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren, a brother, Norman (Bette) Sparby of Napa, CA, and many nieces and nephews.
