Obituary

Harriet Emma Hanson, 98, of Vienna, passed away on September 14, 2026, at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Furness Funeral Home in Clark. Burial will immediately follow the burial at Good Hope Cemetery in Vienna, SD. Visitation will precede the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Furness Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Harriet Emma Hanson, 98, of Vienna, passed away on September 14, 2026, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Harriet was born on June 4, 1928, in Clark County to Otto and Emma Peterson. She attended country schools through the 8th grade. She worked at the Red Owl Grocery store several winters and helped on her parent’s farm in the summers.

Harriet married DuWayne Hanson on October 15, 1949, and the couple had two sons, Mervin and Harry. Farming the Helmer and Tilly Hanson farm alongside his father until his passing in 1960, DuWayne, Harriet and the boys moved to the family farm in 1963.

Harriet remained there until January of 2026, when she entered Jenkins Memory Care in Watertown, SD.

Harriet loved being outside, mowing the yard, doing embroidery work, and working on counted cross stitch. She also liked to read and do word find puzzles.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons Mevin Hanson, and Harry (Roxy) Hanson; grandchildren: Jeremy Hanson, Lisa (Matt Schull) Hanson, Spencer Hanson, Samantha Hanson, Clayton Hanson, Brooke Hanson, Molly Coleman, and Chad Coleman; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Joyce Lien; many nieces and nephews; and Jan Hanson.

Preceding Harriet in death are her husband, DuWayne; her parents, Otto and Emma Peterson; brothers Milford, Charles, and Lloyd Peterson; sisters Lila Hanson and Phyllis Bull; and her grandson Blake Hanson.
