Harold S. Larsen, age 92, Clark, died in the Golden Living Center at Clark on Tuesday morning, June 7, 2011. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11AM in the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark with The Reverend Robin Schaunaman officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Clark. The organist will be Dorothy Fuller. She will play a special presentation of "The Lord's Prayer" There will also be congregation singing. They will sing "In the Garden" and "On Eagle's Wings". Honorary Casketbearers will be Gene Furness, Melvin Hanson and Lester Klinkel. The active casketbearers will be Chuck Langner, Randy Richards, Willie Gruenwald, Francis Haas, David Paulson and Arnie Zuger. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5-7PM at the Furness Funeral Home in Clark and on Saturday morning after 9AM at the Church in Clark. He was born on September 10, 1918 at Vienna, SD, the son of Harry Miles and Emma (Bossen) Larsen. He attended school at Vienna graduating from Vienna High School in 1937. He helped on the family farm following his Father's death until his marriage. On November 27, 1943 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Olberg at the Grace Lutheran Church at Watertown. The couple lived in Vienna and Harold worked for the County of Clark. In 1958, they moved to Sioux Falls where he worked for the State Highway Department as an assistant foreman until November of 1958 when they returned to Clark County and he began his career with the Clark County Highway Department as Superintendent. Shorty, as he became known to many, continued in this position until retiring in 1983. In 1984 he was elected as a Clark County Commissioner and served in this position for over 3 terms. During his tenure as County Highway Superintendent, he served as the President of the South Dakota Highway Supt. Association from 1967-1968 and in 1994 served as Chairman of the Sioux Valley County Commissioners Assn. In 1995 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Human Services at Watertown. Harold was active in his community of Clark also being a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving on Church Council, the Clark Rotary Club, A Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation, and had been a member of the Vienna School Board at one time. In his spare time he thoroughly enjoyed goose hunting in earlier years, tinkering in his garage and second to none was his telling stories and jokes, everyone who knew him will remember at least one! Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, O'Dean "Bunny" Larsen. Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife of nearly 68 years, Evelyn, a resident of the Golden Living Center at Clark, children, Sandra "Sandy" (Wayne "Buster") Altfillisch of Clark, Richard "Dick" (Bernie) Larsen, Robert "Bob" (Linda) Larsen all of Sioux Falls and Rodney "Rod" Larsen of Shawnee Mission, KS, 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
