When his brothers, Robert age 12 and Wayne age 8, heard the baby cry, they ran downstairs and upon seeing the baby they said "Oh, it's just another boy" and they went back to bed.

Road construction took him to the Black Hills of SD, bee keeping for Dale Cook Honey Bee farming took him to Frankfort, SD, and he professionally painted in Watertown and Sioux Falls, SD. Harold returned to his home town of Henry to own and operate Harold's Hardware. He then moved to Clark in 1967, where he owned and operated the Gambles store for almost 13 years and Harold's Appliance for several more years. He worked several years at the UBC Lumber Yard and then became a maintenance technician for seven apartment complexes in Clark. After retiring, he wintered in Casa Grande, AZ starting in 2001.
