Gloria J. Davis, age 85, Brookings, the widow of Lyle Davis, died peacefully in the Brookings Hospital early Wednesday morning, June 18, 2014. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 from 4-6 PM at the Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings and will continue at the Church on Tuesday morning after 9AM. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 10:30 AM in the Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings with The Reverend Rhonda Hanisch officiating. The organist will be Joan Riessen with the soloist being Eileen Shane. There will also be congregational singing. Burial will follow in the Brookings Lutheran (First Lutheran) Cemetery at Brookings. Gloria Jean Anderson was born on December 20, 1928 during a snow storm on a farmstead near Vienna, SD, the daughter of Selmer and Eloise (Kelley) Anderson. As a small child they lived near Vienna, Merton Township and Clark. She was baptized Feb 5, 1929 at Pleasant Lutheran Parsonage and was confirmed Dec 13, 1942 at Good Hope Lutheran Church, Willow Lake. Gloria attended school in Merton Township and Clark where she was a member of 4-H and the Luther League. After high school graduation in 1946, she moved to Minneapolis for a few years then returned to Clark. She worked at Sears catalog office and as a Deputy of Register of Deeds. Gloria was united in marriage to Lyle Hugh Davis on August 7, 1949 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clark. They had four children. The family lived in Clark, Edgemont and Brookings. Gloria was a charter member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. She taught Sunday school and Girl Scouts for many years in Clark and Brookings. She was also local president and district president of VFW Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eve Circle. She studied and documented family genealogy. She always played Farkle, Rummikub and other card games with her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Gloria is survived by daughters Sandra (Larry) Meisenheimer of Brookings, Vickie (Michael) Rosse of Brookings; son Steven (Cathy) Davis of Leavenworth, KS; son-in-law Greg Veal of Bison; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Davis; daughter Marsha Veal; daughter-in-law Vickie Sue Davis; and two brothers Verle (Donna) and Darrel; one sister Arlene (Rollie) Foster.
