George Ohman

George Ohman, age 87, Watertown, formerly of Clark, died peacefully in the Prairie Lakes Hospital at Watertown early Tuesday morning, April 8, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11AM in the Furness Funeral Home Chapel at Clark with The Reverend Gary Anderson officiating. The pianist will be Dorothy Fuller. Serving as casketbearers will be Ronnie Paulson, Brock Antijunti and Chad & Cody Ohman. Burial with full military honors provided by the VFW Post #750 of Watertown and the South Dakota Army National Honor Guard will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Watertown. He was born Nels George Ohman on a farm near Clark on November 21, 1926, the son of Helmer and Mathilda Regina (Rydelius) Ohman. His mother Regina died later during the childbirth of a sibling. Helmer then married Mable. He attended country school and farmed with his parents in Woodland Township, NW of Clark. George served his country honorably in the US Army from 1950-1952. He was a member of the VFW Post #750 in Watertown. On January 21, 1959 he was united in marriage to Carla Splinter. The couple lived and farmed in Woodland Township until retiring and moving to Watertown in 1973. In 1983 he began a trucking business and owned and operated his own truck until retiring again. He thoroughly enjoyed driving truck, being in the truck, talking about the truck and most of all, was thoroughly happy that his two boys also trucked. George also owned several pieces of property with houses that he rented and also a trailer court. Some of his fondest moments were spent watching the Price is Right, sitting around the table talking & eating Carla's great food. It would really make his day whenever anyone would come to visit; especially Ronnie Paulson would stop by and start talking about a favorite subject of George's, classic cars! He loved auctions, looking through boxes of "junk" and finding something & living right next door to Jenson Auction when it was uptown Watertown. Preceding him in death were his parents, a son in infancy and siblings. Survivors include his wife Carla of Watertown, sons, Greg (Rhonda) Ohman and Kim (Holly) Ohman all of Watertown, grandchildren, Chad, Cody, Chuck and Lisa and 8 great-grandchildren. He also leaves siblings, Ann Sandbakken of Wilmot, SD, Marlowe (Jean) Ohman of Brookings, Norma (Lowell) Wahl of Clark and a sister-in-law, Lois Le Ross of Sioux Falls. Furness Funeral Home of Clark is serving the family where there is an on-line registry at www.furnessfuneralhome.com.
