Elwood Kenneth Peterson was born on June 5, 1929, at Rosedale Township, Clark County, SD, the son of Emil and Ida (Collins) Peterson. He was baptized and confirmed Lutheran. He grew up on the family farm and attended grade school in Rosedale and Hague Schools. In his youth, he survived a bout with polio. He helped his dad farm following his schooling.

On October 21, 1951, he was united in marriage to Shirley Carstensen at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bryant. The couple lived in Willow Lake where he helped Vernon Peterson with carpentry work and also on the family farm. In 1956, the couple moved to a farm west of Willow Lake where he resided until 2013. Shirley died in 2009.

They raised cattle, chicken and hogs in their earlier years and he continued raising cattle until he left the farm. He raised a lot of wheat and corn throughout the years. Elwood's passion was farming as was evident by his daily calls to see what was going on at the farm. He cherished his family and loved spending time with them. In 2013, he moved to Touchmark at All Saints at Sioux Falls. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Willow Lake.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his children Rickie (Charlene) Peterson of Willow Lake, Bonnie (Bruce) Mogen of Dell Rapids, Randy (Kelli) Peterson of Huron and Rebecca (Bradley) Mair of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren, Christa (John) Harper of Watertown, Cole Peterson of Brookings, Spencer Peterson of Huron, Brett Mogen of Brookings, Brooklyn and Boston Mair of Sioux Falls; and two great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Emma Harper.
