Eleanor Hassebroek, age 93, the widow of John B. Hassebroek, died on Thursday, September 1, 2005 at the Burton Care Center in Burlington, WA. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at noon at the Collins Cemetery in Willow Lake, South Dakota. She was born on July 8, 1912 at Willow Lake, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Matson) Pettit. She graduated from Bryant High School and went on to Huron College to get her teaching degree. She taught elementary grades for 20 years in SOuth Dakota and Wisconsin. On August 16, 1935 she wsa united in marriage to John Hassebroek at Willow Lake. The couple made their home in Wisconsin shortly after their marriage, residing in Burkhardt for over 20 years. They moved to Skagit County in 1976. Mr. Hassebroek died in 1999. Eleanor was a member of the Allen-Blanchard United Methodist Church, the United Methodists Women and the National Retired Teachers Association. She was a gentle and compassionate person, a real lady, but at the same time would play sports like badminton, horseshoes and basketball. She even played basketball in high school and was a real fan of the Seattle Sonics basketball team. She never said an unkind word about anyone and was full of grace, warmth and love. She spent a great amount of time in her vegetable and flower garden, which she enjoyed so much. Survivors include two sons, Marvin O. Hassebroek of Fairbanks, AK and Lyle G. Hassebroek of Carnation, WA; six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband John, two brothers and a sister. Memorial would be preferred to the Ammen-Blanhard United Methodist Church, 16775 Allen West Road, Bow, WA. 98232. There will be no visitation locally.
