Burial with full military honors by the Cagley-Smith American Legion Post #60 of Clark and the South Dakota Army National Honor Guard will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Clark. He was born Edward Oscar Hallberg on March 4, 1926 near Clark, the son of Oscar and Ruth (Peterson) Hallberg. Ed attended the Good Luck Country School in Darlington Township and then attended Clark High School. He was passionate about sports, played football and basketball in high school, but his real love was baseball. With his three brothers and many cousins, they usually had enough to field two teams, and after the farm work was done daily, the baseball game was on. He pitched for the Clark Cubs. Ed served in the United States Army honorably as a military policeman from 1945 - 1946. A highlight for him was the opportunity to participate in an honor flight to Washington, DC to the WW II Monuments. On August 26th, 1950 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Arthur at the Methodist Church in Clark. Ed was employed during the building of the Ft. Randall Dam at Pickstown. Ed farmed for most of his life and also worked for the Department of Agriculture for several winters testing cattle and sheep on the South Dakota reservations. Ed loved horses and had a way with them before anyone ever heard of horse whispers. He spent many hours working with his kids and grand-kids in the 4-H programs and high school rodeo. In 1962 Ed and Mary Lou bought the Ted Bible home and they have lived and farmed there since. Ed loved the land, his livestock, second to none though was his time spent with family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He enjoyed hunting, horseback riding, playing ball and playing with the kids. He was a member of the Clark United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau and Farmer's Union-serving in several capacities, and served as a Darlington Township clerk. Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Kenneth and Eldon. Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife over 65 years, Mary Lou Hallberg of Clark, children, Barb Hallberg (Jim Tatge), Deb Hallberg (Jack) Hattervig and Tom (Janet) Hallberg, 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson. Also surviving is a brother, Marvin (Marilyn) Hallberg of Moses Lake, WA, and sisters-in-law, Marion Hallberg of Andover, MN and Mary Ann Hallberg of Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral arrangements are with the Furness Funeral Home at Clark where there is an on-line registry at www.furnessfuneralhome.com
