She was born near Elrod, SD on November 20, 1910 the daughter of Christian Elexander and Martha Jenette (Brakken) Bowen. She attended school in Elrod and then was a 1930 graduate of Clark High School.
On December 24, 1930 she married Carl Edward Hoover at Red Lake, MN. To this union 2 children were born, Gordon, who died at birth and a daughter, Colleen Kay, who was handicapped and died when she was a young lady. Carl was employed by the Montgomery Ward Company for many years. They moved to various places in the United States including New Mexico, Kansas, Iowa and South Dakota. After his retirement, they moved to South Shore and opened and operated Hoover Grocery. He died on January 15 of 1990. Dorthea has made Clark her home for several years living in the Fay Wookey Memorial Assisted Living Center and then recently into the Golden Living Center.
She will long be remembered for her willingness to help others, always fussing and doing things for many. Another fond memory of Dorthea will be the twinkle in her eye, most of the time being one step ahead of others in thought. She loved to be with children. Dorthea never wanted to bother anyone, stating whats there to do here after visiting me! Besides spending time visiting, she enjoyed playing cards and dancing in early years. She gardened, not really out of liking it; more importantly was the necessity of it. In years past she also volunteered at a nursing home.
In years past she attended the Congregational Church and more recently the United Methodist Church at Clark.
Survivors include a brother, Norman E. (Jeanette) Bowen of Durand, WI and many nieces and nephews to whom assisted her and gave her emotional support.
Preceding her in death were her parents, children, husband and siblings, Amanda, Anna, Sylvester, Leonard, Melvin and Celia.
Arrangements are announced by the Furness Funeral Home at Clark where there is an on-line registry at www.furnessfuneralhome.com
