Dorothy Mae Harrington was born August 17, 1938, at the Bradley Hospital in Bradley, SD. She was the oldest of five children born to George and Blanche (DeLong) Harrington. She was born a twin but her infant brother, Danny Dale, died at birth. Dorothy grew up in the Bradley area and attended school there graduating from Bradley High School in 1957. Living her entire life in the Bradley area, she was an important part of the community and will be greatly missed.
In high school, her best friend introduced her to LaVerne T. Springer. On June 2, 1957, the two were married at the Bradley Baptist Church. She began working at the Bradley Post Office in May 1960 and worked for the postal system until her retirement in October of 1992. Dorothy kept busy in the community as a member of the organizational committee for the Bradley Centennial held in 1985, helped organize the Bradley Alumni Association and was very instrumental in obtaining grants and planning the Bradley Community Center. She was the manager of the calendar of activities at the Bradley Community Center until her death.
Following her retirement, Dorothy kept busy serving as the bookkeeper for Springer Construction and as the clerk for Blaine Township. She was an active member of the Bradley Legion Auxiliary since 1957 serving in many offices and presiding as president for many years. She also was a faithful member of the St. John's Lutheran Church and the WELCA. She was never one to sit still and always ready to lend a helping hand.
In their earlier years, LaVerne and Dorothy enjoyed camping making lifelong friends, especially ones from DeSmet. Dorothy enjoyed cooking and baking, becoming famous in the Bradley area for her delicious, beautiful cakes she made for special events in the community. She enjoyed gardening, both vegetables and flowers, canning, sewing and cross stitch. Dorothy loved cats and had one that rarely left her side in the last few days of her life.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, LaVerne; and siblings, Danny Dale Harrington, Donald Ray Harrington, Marilyn Swanson and Richard Harrington.
Blessed for having been a part of her life are her sons, Danny Lee Springer, Dale Eugene (Gina Kannas) Springer, and Roger Alan (Lorie) Springer, all of Bradley; granddaughters, ShyAnn and Sierra Springer; sisters-in-law, Becky Harrington, Bradley and Leona Lien, Marshall, MI; brother-in-law, Doug Swanson, Clark; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
