Doris Madsen, age 90, of Carpenter, died early Friday morning, August 28, 2015 at the Parkview Care Center in Bryant. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church - WELS at Willow Lake, with Pastor Randy Bader officiating. There will be no visitation, burial will be held at a later date in the Richland Cemetery near Carpenter. Doris Johnson was born June 15, 1925, to Caroline and Elmer Johnson at Carpenter, SD, the oldest of seven children, where she lived all her life. She attended Carpenter grade school and graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1943. She grew up with and married her husband, Robert W. Madsen, also of Carpenter, on March 8, 1947. They had six children, five of whom who grew up on the family farm near Carpenter. Doris received her nursing degree at Sprague Hospital in 1946 and was a Cadet Nurse during World War II. She was an RN at St. John's Hospital in Huron, and at nursing homes in Clark and Bryant in addition to raising her family. She was accomplished at cooking for her family and hired hands and whoever Bob invited to the family table, often without notice. She also excelled at gardening, knitting, crocheting, tailoring and sewed her daughters' prom dresses and college wardrobes, all of which she poo-poohed as being "nothing special." Doris is survived by her children: Muriel Shepard (Ron Bender, deceased) of Rapid City; Jane Brownell (Richard) of Wakefield, NE; Kim (Valerie) Madsen of Carpenter; Kirk Madsen of Carpenter; ten grandchildren (Tom, Amanda, Cami, Brett, Maggie, Anna, Kaley, Kyla, Brock and Megan); six great grandchildren (Tiani, Caleb, Cali, Cameron, Scarlett, Sebastian); two step great grandchildren (Roger, Ana); four step great-great-great grandchildren (Jackie, Lucas, Merrick, Ruby); sisters Dorothy Miller of Willow Lake and Janice Malcomb of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband, son John Robert, daughter Candyce Cooper, granddaughter Katie Brownell, great grandson Davy, two sisters, two brothers and son-in-law.
