Delwyn B. Warkenthien, age 69, a resident of Lake Albert, near Arlington, SD, died peacefully on Friday morning, July 30, 2010 at his residence with family at his side. Delwyn had been a longtime farmer in the Garden City/Elrod communities until his retirement.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 2PM in the Furness Funeral Home Chapel at Clark with The Reverend Dayne Zachrison officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Clark. Dorothy Fuller will be the pianist with Greg Furness as soloist.
There will be no visitation.
Delwyn B. Warkenthien was born on March 1, 1941 at Clark, SD, the son of Alfred and Mable (Trevithick) Warkenthien. He attended country school through the 8th grade in Lake Township near Willow Lake graduating from Willow Lake High School in 1959.
On November 4, 1961 he was united in marriage to Shryl McPeek at Willow Lake. After living for a short time in Sioux Falls and Watertown and a 6 month stint in the National Guard, he returned to the farm near Willow Lake and farmed with his father and brother, Keith. In 1965, they moved to a farm south of Garden City, near Elrod where they farmed for nearly 40 years. On March 10, 1998 Shryl died and Delwyn continued living on the farm. He and Shryl had begun to enjoy winters in Arizona so Delwyn continued to winter there.
On February 24, 2001 he was united in marriage to Carol Feickert at Gold Canyon, AZ. Carol helped Delwyn continue to enjoy his retirement by spending winters at Gold Canyon and summers on Lake Albert. He also enjoyed traveling to Mexico and Hawaii.
Besides his love of the land, he also enjoyed hunting antelope and pheasant and bowling. Some of his most enjoyable moments were spent with family and fishing, making two trips to Alaska, salmon fishing and his hours spent on Lake Albert. He was a member of the United Methodist Church having served in various capacities while a member of the Clark Church. Delwyn was a member of the Clark Lions Club and the Good Ole Boys Club, a golf outing group, in Gold Canyon.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Shryl, brothers, Darrel and Keith, sister-in-law, Adlyn Warkenthien, brother-in-laws, Robert Woodland and Buzz Bastian.
Grateful for having shared his life is his wife Carol Warkenthien of Lake Albert, children, Carmen (Alden) Brown of Faulkton, SD, Carla (Bob) Taepke of Coon Rapids, MN and Curtis (Kathy Langerock) of Watertown, siblings, Marivonne Bastian of Clark, Sharon (Roger) LaMont of Willow Lake, Janice (Gary) Kangas of Esko, MN and Marlin (Cindy) Warkenthien of Willow Lake. He also leaves 3 grandchildren, Kiersten, Keagan and Rebekah. A sister-in-law, Carolyn (Bob) Harding of Clark and step-children Melody (Roger) LaVahn of Tempe, AZ, Jack Degenstein of Bismarck, ND and step-grandchildren, Lindsay, Lyn and Landon also survive.
Memorials in his memory would be appreciated to the Prairie Lakes Hospice at Watertown or the American Cancer Society, Clark County Chapter %Furness Funeral Home, 402 N. Commercial Street, Clark, SD 57225.
