David Lynn Hanchett was born on August 15, 1949 in Watertown, the oldest of six children to parents Harold "Tiny"  and Donna (Urdahl) Hanchett. With his father being in the military, the family moved often during his childhood.  They lived for ten years in Minot, ND where he was confirmed into the Catholic faith. In 1959, the family moved to Livermore, CA. While there he attended school and participated in football and was a very successful wrestler.  David graduated from Granada High School in 1969. Following his graduation, the family moved back to Clark, SD. He was then drafted into the US Army on October 31, 1970 and served during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge on November 24, 1971. David then joined the Clark unit of the US National Guards.  He served in the guards for many years.

He married Bobbie Rieke in June of 1975.  To this union, Traci was born in 1977 and Sara in 1980.  The couple later divorced.  David worked at Chef Reddy/McCain Foods in Clark and for several years at Walmart in Watertown.  He worked for various other companies in Watertown.

David was a proud member of several military organizations including the Vietnam Veterans of America of Watertown, the VFW, and the Raymond American Legion Baker Post #209. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and dirt track racing, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Allen Kohrs.
