Carol Houghtaling

Carol Houghtaling, 94, formerly of Doland, passed away on May 8, 2025, at the Avantara Clark care center.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the Doland United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Teresa Person officiating the service.  Burial will take place at Doland Cemetery.  All are invited following the service to join the family for a time of fellowship and a meal at the church.  Visitation will be held the evening prior, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Furness Funeral Home in Clark, SD, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.  Furness Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Carol Iris Starr and her twin sister, Cleo, were born on January 29, 1931 to Ralph and Erma (Muellenberg) Starr. She attended country school near Doland through the 8th grade. She then attended Doland High School and graduated in 1949. On October 28, 1951, Carol married her high school sweetheart, Dana Houghtaling. Shortly after their marriage, Dana and Carol moved to San Diego where Dana was serving in the Navy. Upon his discharge in 1954, they returned to the Houghtaling farm.

Carol worked 40 plus years for Security State Bank in Doland, retiring in 1996. Carol was a member of the LaDelle Rebecca Lodge and the Doland Methodist Church. She enjoyed square dancing, mowing the lawn, tending to her flowers, trees and plants, cooking and baking, crocheting, watching the NBA, entertaining friends and family, babysitting grandchildren, and traveling on many bus tours and cruises with Dana.

Carol passed away Thursday, May 8, 2025 at Avantara Nursing Home in Clark, South Dakota at the age of 94.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Dana of Doland; two sons, Larry of Yale and Jan (Kylene) Houghtaling of Doland, as well as 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin sister Cleo, her sister Beula, and her brothers, Daryle and Don.
