Arlene (Schorzmann) Mees Schnabel, age 81, Huron, died in the Sun Quest Healthcare Center in Huron on Sunday morning, June 6, 2010. She was the mother of Marsha (Brad) Furness of Clark and of Kenneth (Sharla) Mees of Huron.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 10th, 2010 at 10:30AM in the Huron Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Lafreniere officiating. Burial will follow in the Rest Haven Cemetery at Alpena, SD. Music will be presented by Deb Hetle as pianist with Gina Mees as soloist. The Casketbearers will be her grandchildren, Chad, Chris, Nick, Josh, Micah and Danielle Thomas and Dustin and Kelsey Mees.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron from 1-8 PM with the family present from 6-8PM. Visitation will continue on Thursday morning at the Church in Huron 1 hour preceding services.
Arlene (Schorzmann) Mees Schnabel, age 81, Huron, SD died on Sunday morning, June 6, 2010 in the SunQuest Healthcare Center at Huron.
She was born, Arlene Mae Schorzmann, on November 29, 1928 on the homestead in Jerauld County, near Alpena, SD, the daughter of Albert and Martha (Horst) Schorzmann. Arlene attended the Roosevelt Country School northwest of Alpena and then graduated from Alpena High School in 1947.
She was united in marriage to Milton Mees at Pipestone, MN in February of 1949. To this union two children, Marsha and Kenneth were born. They later divorced.
She moved to Huron and while living in Huron, she worked at a caf at the corner of 2nd and Dakota. She then moved to Wessington Springs where she worked at Agies Caf as well as other places of employment. In the early 1960s she returned to Huron, worked for the Huron School District, Huron Clinic, the Bell Motel which she cleaned and later managed, Harolds Caf, Tim & Jims Auto Clinic, baby sat for many over the years and enjoyed hosting out of state hunters and fair goers for many years.
Her hobbies included quilting, sewing, working crossword puzzles, crocheting, gardening and canning. Another favorite of hers was baking cakes and decorating them for all occasions, even grandchildrens weddings in recent years. Long in the memory of many will be her love of baking, especially apple pie, and kuchen.
Arlene was a member of the Huron Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, was a Church Elder and was a member of the Women Missionary Union. Her Love of the Lord was second to none.
Preceding her in death were her parents, siblings, Edgar, Victor and Gordon Schorzmann, Lenora Keelin and a baby boy in infancy.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, Marsha (Brad) Furness of Clark, Kenneth (Sharla) Mees of Huron, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, brothers, Leonard Schorzmann of Newberg, OR, Melvin (Alice) Schorzmann of Alpena, SD and Elmer (Sharon) Schorzmann of Rapid City, SD.
