Alyce Miles, age 88, Sioux Falls, formerly of Doland, died November 14,2019 at a Sioux Falls hospital.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 22, 2019 from 5-7 PM at Miller Funeral Home- Downtown, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls. A liturgical wake will be held at 6 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 10:30 AM at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls. Celebrant will be Reverend James Morgan. Casketbearers will be her grandchildren. Burial will be in the Doland Cemetery at 4 PM Saturday with a fellowship time at the Bottoms Up in Doland following interment.
Alyce Leora Paul Miles
Alyce was born June 8, 1931, to Bonnie Mundell at DeSmet, SD. The day after her birth, she was taken to the South Dakota Children's Home in Sioux Falls, SD, where she was placed for adoption. In late June of that year, she went to live with Irving and Frances Paul of rural Doland, SD and was adopted by the Pauls on April 30, 1932. Alyce joined a brother, Delbert, who had also been adopted from the Children's Home in 1925. Her elementary schooling was at rural Doland in one-room schools except for two years in the Doland Elementary School. She graduated from Doland High School in 1949. After earning her First Grade Teacher's Certificate from Northern State Teacher's College at Aberdeen, SD in 1950, she taught one-room country schools in the Doland area for five years.
She married Norbert "Tip" Miles on June 25, 1953, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Turton, SD. Five children were born to this union, Karin, Paula, Kelly, Kevin, and Timothy. They farmed at Turton until 1956 when they moved into Doland. Alyce was a stay-at-home mom until she and her husband bought the Doland Times Record and The Conde News, which they published until their retirement in 1995. She served as editor and publisher of these newspapers for the last fifteen years that they owned them. In 2005, Tip and Alyce moved to Sioux Falls and lived in the Cathedral Heights neighborhood.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Altar Society in Doland and currently a member of St. Joseph Cathedral of Sioux Falls, South Dakota Press Association and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Alyce is survived by: her husband, Tip; five children: Karin Wiese, Sioux Falls; Paula (Val) Rausch, Big Stone City; Kelly Remily, Rapid City; Kevin (Shannon) Miles, Sioux Falls; Timothy (Kari Johnson) Miles, Lincoln, NE; grandchildren Amber (John), Brittany (Tommy), and Erin (Josh), Miles (Holli), Bryce (Lindsey), Molly (Patrick), Brenna, Dirk (Erin), Ethan (Chantae), Moriah (Nick), Keegan (Maris), Caelan, Sean, Ava, and Gabe and great-grandchildren Grace, Caeden, William, Ian, Ainsley, Remy, Hazel, Piper, Olivia, Julian, step great granddaughters: Courtney and Mikayla; half-sister Elnora (David) Evans, Eagle Point,OR ; half-brother Michael (Diane) Perry, Bellingham, WA; and many family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents Irving and Frances Paul; Bonnie Perry, biological mother; Delbert and Verna Paul, brother and sister-in-law; Allan Wiese, son-in-law; Pete Franklin, significant other of Kelly Remily.
