Alvina Marie (Mandalek) Horsted, age 89, of Willow Lake, died Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Bryant Parkview Care Center in Bryant. Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in Willow Lake with the Reverend Keith Garness officiating. JoAnn Eggleston will be the organist. Visitation will start at 1:00 PM at the church. Burial will in the Scandinavian Cemetery of rural Bryant. Alvina Marie Horsted was born on June 4, 1923 to Martin and Marie (Scheonhals) Mandalek on the Ole Mandalek farm, Southwest of Follett, Texas. She attended the Cope country school for 8 years. Following graduation of country school, she moved to Darouzett, Texas where she lived with a family that assisted Alvina to obtain her GED certificate. While living in Darouzett, she took piano lessons and played the organ for church services at the Zion Lutheran Church in Follett, Texas. She then moved to Wichita, Kansas where she worked for Bemis Bag Company and at Winfield College in the kitchen. She later worked as a typist for Boeing Aircraft in the engineering department. In 1957, she met Delvin Horsted in the choir loft at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas. They were married on May 30, 1957 at Emanuel Lutheran Church. Their son, David Christian was born on January 10, 1959. In 1961, Delvin and Alvina moved to Willow Lake and started a blacksmith repair shop. Alvina spent many hours grinding cutter blades, mower blades and swather sickles. She later worked at the turkey plant in Watertown and then for the potato processing plant in Clark. In 1987, Alvina retired and was a full-time housekeeping. In 2009 Alvina moved to the Bryant Care Center. Alvina enjoyed sewing and reading. She loved listening to music and traveling. She was a lifelong Lutheran and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was a dedicated wife, mother and family subsidy throughout her married life. Alvina is survived by her husband, Delvin of Willow Lake; son, David Christian (Judy) Horsted of Vancouver, Washington; a sister, Rosalie (Lloyd) Schmidt; sister-in-law, Charlotte (Elmer) Mandalek, both of Haven, Kansas, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Alvina was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Alvin and Elmer Mandalek.
