Life Legacy

Earl John Ole Linneman, age 82, rural Clark, died at his home near Clark on Thursday evening, February 17, 2011 after a brief illness.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 10:30 AM in the St. Michael’s Catholic Church at Clark with The Reverend Shane Stevens officiating. The organist will be Eileen Heilman with Bonnie Graves as the song leader. A private burial will be held in the Linneman Family Cemetery near Clark. Following the mass full military honors will be provided by the Raymond American Legion Baker Post #209 and the South Dakota Army National Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 PM at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel in Clark and 1 hour preceding services at the Church on Thursday.

He was born on November 11, 1928 at Dempster, SD, the son of William and Gertrude (Thompson) Linnemann. Ole worked as a farm laborer during his early years. In December of 1950, he joined the United States Navy and served his country until October of 1954. He served on the USS LST 1084 during the Korean War and was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal (Three Stars) and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was united in marriage to Mary F. Spartz on March 2, 1957 at Long Beach, CA. They farmed near Brookings prior to moving to Clark in 1967. He was well known for his love of horses and horsemanship as well as creating a blood line of horses. He enjoyed watching young people perform at local rodeos and horse shows. For many years he sponsored horse shows of his own at the family farm northwest of Clark. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association for over 30 years. In his community he was a 4-H leader for horsemanship and was a member of the American Legion Baker Post #209 at Raymond.

One of his favorite everyday pastimes was going into Clark for afternoon coffee and visiting with friends.

Survivors his wife Mary of Clark, children, Judy Hawke of Huntsville, AL, Susan McNeal of East Helena, MT, Robert (Robin) Linneman of Clark, Catherine Linneman of Watertown, Amy Mathis of Rayville, MO, Sandy Bebo of Redfield, SD and Matthew Linneman of Fargo, ND, 13 grandchildren, who will serve as casketbearers- Mary Parr, Robert, Jacob, Ty and Joseph Linneman, Luke Hawke, Marcus, Zachary and Breann Mathis, Cooper and Cheyenne Bebo and Sawyer and Matthew Sterud. His great-grandchildren, Andrew Parr and Eva and Lily Linneman will serve as honorary casketbearers. He also is survived by siblings, Rita (Clare) Kerr of Estelline, SD, Dorla (Leslie) Alseike of Wichita, KS, Donna (Lloyd) Shook of St. Elsinore, CA, William (Beverly) Linneman of Watertown, SD, Marjorie (LeRoy) Warborg of Estelline, SD and Gary Linneman of Elizabeth, CO.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a son, John William Linneman, son-in-law, James Hawke, Jr, and siblings, Lyle Linneman and Joan (Harold) Harrenga.
